St Columbas

Client: St Peters Convent

Architect: BCH Architects

Main Contractor: Allenbuild

Value: £2 million

Lucking and Clark were appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers for the modernisation and extension to this religious retreat in Woking

The project included the forming of openings in structural walls, floor strengthening, alterations to the layout and the addition of a circular two storey building as a main entrance with a space for reflection above. ‘No dig’ road construction techniques were used to form a route through the trees without damaging them.

No structural information of the building was available at the start of our involvement so opening up was required to determine the details of the existing structure.  The new structures were constructed in steel, masonry, concrete, timber and glass.

The finished building was opened by the Archbishop of Canterbury in November 2009 and the Convent is delighted with the finished project.
