Lucking & Clark was appointed by Clifford Devlin to act as temporary works engineers for the new railway viaduct, forming part of the Thameslink project to increase the capacity through London Bridge Station. The project involves providing a new viaduct next to the existing viaduct in a busy urban environment, whilst minimising the impact on the vibrant surrounding community. The proposed development comprises major structures and building works packages which interfered with existing structures including the historic Borough Market roof.
Our role included providing temporary works and demolition advice for a number of existing structures which were to be demolished as part of the scheme. Careful sequencing and temporary works were required to maintain stability of the buildings during demolition. The most challenging part of the project was the demolition of the market roof.
The roof consisted of steel trusses with glass infill supported on steel columns. Access on the roof was through reinforced concrete walkways supported on the trusses. A detailed sequence of works needed to be produced to ensure that the structure was stable during demolition works.
