Lucking & Clark were appointed by Eiffel, the glass sub-contractor, to carry out structural design and detailing of several special structures as part of the redevelopment of the Lower Precinct at Coventry. The steel supported glass structures included two roofs, two facades, a pair of infill canopies and two covered walkways.
The structure shown above is the upper roof. This is the largest of the special structures with a width of approximately 35 metres and length of about 58 metres. The glass panels of the roof are supported on a system of pre-tensioned stainless steel rods and circular hollow section beams. These in turn are supported on steel tree structures as can be seen in the photograph.
